Partners in the MIL-HER ACCESSIBLE project visited Naissaar and the Estonian War Museum
On April 28–29, the Estonian War Museum hosted the partners of the Estonian-Latvian cross-border project MIL-HER ACCESSIBLE to review the project’s progress to date, share experiences, and discuss next steps.
On the first day, the group traveled to Naissaar island to explore its rich military heritage and test the map application currently under development in a real-world environment. Led by Ranno Sõnum, a researcher at the Estonian War Museum, the group visited the Naissaar Military Museum, the cemetery where British sailors were buried during the Crimean War, Coastal Defense Battery No. 7 (the so-called “American Batteries”), and Coastal Defense Battery No. 10b. Discussions also focused on how to improve the accessibility of these sites and the visitor experience for various target groups.
The following day, a seminar was held at the Estonian War Museum, where project partners provided an overview of their activities and progress to date. All partners have already implemented or are planning solutions to improve accessibility at their selected military heritage sites, whether by adapting content for different target groups, ensuring content accessibility for the visually impaired, or providing physical accessibility for those with mobility impairments. The next step is the testing and implementation phase.
At the same time, the development of the corresponding web environment, maps, and educational materials is underway.
The Estonian War Museum is currently working on creating a new exhibition at the Museum of the Estonian Military Academy in Tartu, and thanks to funding from the MIL-HER project, the new exhibition will be more accessible to various target groups than before.
The goal of the Estonian-Latvian cross-border project MIL-HER ACCESSIBLE is to jointly develop four accessibility solutions, test them, and then implement them at 11 sites of Estonian and Latvian military heritage included in the program, to improve the accessibility of the existing military heritage tourism product militaryheritagetourism.info for various social groups: school-age youth, people with visual and mobility impairments, and those with anxiety issues.
The project will enhance the Estonian-Latvian military heritage tourism product by implementing accessibility solutions, incorporating accessibility information into marketing materials, and promoting the adoption of accessibility solutions at points of interest within the military heritage tourism network. Outputs include adapted content for school-age youth in interactive and digital formats, as well as audio/video/mixed reality solutions for people with visual impairments, limited mobility, and claustrophobia.
The total budget of the project is EUR 1,423,322.00. Co-financing from the European Regional Development Fund amounts to EUR 1,138,657.60.
