New issue of the Estonian Yearbook of Military History is about the independence wars in Eastern Europe

The English-language issue published in 2023, which celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Estonian War of Independence, is now available in Estonian with some additional articles.

After the collapse of Tsarist Russia and other continental European empires at the end of World War I, many minority peoples tried to establish or restore their own statehood. In most cases, they achieved this through a war of independence, often having to fight against several enemies, or a civil war. As is usually the case with internal conflicts between states and peoples, all parties received help from abroad, as neighbouring countries are always interested in an outcome favourable for themselves.

The history of the Estonian War of Independence is important to all Estonians, but knowledge of what happened in neighbouring countries and beyond gives us the opportunity to compare, discover little-known connections, and perhaps also understand why other nations see many historical events completely differently from us.

The Estonian Yearbook of Military History is a peer-reviewed academic journal founded in 2011 and published annually by the Estonian War Museum – General Laidoner Museum and Tallinn University Press. The target audience for the collection includes scholars of military history both in Estonia and abroad, as well as the broader community of military history enthusiasts in Estonia.

The yearbook is available for purchase at the Estonian War Museum’s gift shop and well-stocked bookstores. The full text of the book is available for free reading on the Tallinn University Press website.
