
Hendrik Sepp Prize
Hendrik Sepp (1888-1943) was a professor of Estonian and Nordic history at the University of Tartu, an academic, the author of more than 300 historical writings. His main fields of research were the period of the wars following the Livonian War and the Northern War, but he also wrote extensively on economic, cultural and social history. Sepp’s most influential research work was his doctoral dissertation “The Siege and Battle of Narva in 1700”.
The award, named after Hendrik Sepp, an eminent military historian, values and recognises in-depth research of the Estonian military history from prehistory to the present day. Since 2013, the Estonian Ministry of Defence and the Estonian War Museum – General Laidoner Museum have been awarding a prize of up to €3000 to the author or a group of authors of an Estonian military history publication published in print during the previous calendar year. The recipients of the prize are usually announced at the War Museum’s scientific conference or on the anniversary of Hendrik Sepa’s birth on 23 March.

The 2023 Book Prize was awarded to Ago Pajur and Toivo Kikkas for their source publication “Ohvitseri päevaraamat. Ants Matsalo” (“The Officer’s Diary. Ants Matsalo”) (Uurimusi ja allikmaterjale Eesti sõjaajaloost. 10. Tartu: Rahvusarhiiv, 2022). The winner of the article prize is Reigo Rosenthal for his article “Tallinna 1944. aasta märtsipommitamine Punaarmee kaugtegevuslennuväe dokumentide valguses” (“The March 1944 bombing of Tallinn in the light of the Red Army’s long-range air force documents”), published in the fourth issue of Tuna magazine in 2022.
