War monuments

Soviet war monuments and war graves in Estonia 1944-1991

The database is based on the materials compiled by the Working Group for the Mapping of Soviet Occupation Memorials, which was set up at the Government Office in 2022. The database brings together data on 365 Soviet war memorials that were or are located on Estonian territory, most of which were erected to commemorate the fallen in the common graves of the Red Army. The database also contains monuments marking the place of the fallen or the place of battle of an important person in the eyes of the Soviet authorities. For each monument, it is indicated whether it has been removed or not, as well as historical information about the monument. Historical references and articles, a link to further information and photographs are included where possible.

If the monument has marked a war grave, the database indicates how many people were buried there according to the war commissariats of the then Estonian SSR. If the monument, which was a war grave during the Soviet occupation, has been replaced by a neutral grave marker, the monument record will include photographs of both grave markers. If excavations have been carried out in the war cemetery, this is also recorded. The number assigned to the site by the Working Group for the Mapping of Soviet Occupation Memorials is also included.

The database will be updated on an ongoing basis. If anyone has additional information on any of the monuments, please let us know at monument@esm.ee.

Kui monument on olnud sõjahaua tähiseks, siis on andmebaasis ära toodud, kui palju oli sinna toonases Eesti NSV tegutsenud sõjakomissariaatide andmete järgi inimesi maetud. Kui sõjahaual asunud Nõukogude okupatsiooni ajal püsitatud monument on asendatud neutraalse hauatähisega, siis on monumendi kirje juures fotod mõlemast hauasambast. Kui sõjahaual on toimunud väljakaevamised, siis on ka selle kohta andmed olemas. Lisatud on ka Riigikantselei Nõukogude okupatsioonivõimu mälestusmärkide kaardistamise töörühma poolt objektile antud number.
