International military history conferene calls for papers about laws of war

The Estonian War Museum, Baltic Defence College and Estonian Military Academy call for papers on an international Baltic military history conference „Historical Perspectives on the Laws of War and Implementation of Military Justice“, which will be held on 30th and 31st October 2025 in Tartu University Library.

Wars have marked humanity since the dawn of civilisation, and throughout history, both informal and formal rules have sought to govern conduct in conflict starting from requirement to treate the officers of surrendered enemy with dignity up until the Hague and Geneva conventions, which remain the cornerstone of international humanitarian law today.

This year’s conference will examine laws of war and military justice practices through a historical lens, exploring their profound effects on societies, people, and state institutions.

While contemporary international humanitarian law falls outside our scope, the conference welcomes thoughtful historical analyses that may illuminate parallels with present circumstances.

Call for papers is open till 30th June. Please find it here.
